MADURAI: A proposal would be submitted to the State Government to establish Department of Sri Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar in Madurai Kamaraj University and offer various courses based on his life history.
The existing Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar (PMT) Chair in the university would be converted into a department after getting the varsity Syndicate approval, according to K.Muthuchelian, Director, PMT Chair, MKU.
The proposal was mentioned during a special lecture on ‘the role of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar in communal harmony of India’ organised in the university on August 3.
Dr. Muthuchelian said that diploma, certificate and postgraduate courses along with research programmes will be offered in the proposed department.

The PMT Chair also has plans to establish a photo gallery and museum besides creating a website on freedom fighter Thevar.
Some of the topics suggested for research were on contributions of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar in freedom struggle, revocation of Criminal Tribes Act, removal of zamindari system, relationship of Thevar with eminent leaders like Gandhiji, Nethaji, Nehru and Kamaraj.
C a Chennai-based poet, stated that Muthuramalinga Thevar stood as a bridge between Hindus, Muslims and Christians and he stood for national integration.
“He was very pious, spiritual and had respect for reformists like Swami Vivekananda, Vallalar and Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa,” Mr.Bharathi said.
G. Gnanasambandan, Reader, Department of Tamil, Thiagarajar College, spoke on Thevar’s courage, sharpness, wisdom and transparency in public life.
He explained the way in which Thevar succeeded in taking untouchables into Meenakshi Temple.
